35th AU Summit underway in Addis Ababa
GOOBJOOG NEWS/ADDIS ABABA: The 35th African Union (AU) Summit is currently underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the President of Somalia among dignitaries participating in the two-day Summit.
At least 25 African Heads of State and Governments are expected to attend the summit which will consider among other items, the full operationalization of the African Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
The meeting will also discuss measures to be put in place to mitigate the adverse impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic and to formulate a framework that will see the elimination of Malaria,TB and end AIDS in the African Continent by 2030.
Among other key areas of focus will be the African candidates and candidatures to the international system and the African Union Peace and Security Council Agenda for the month of February, 2022.
Africa CDC was launched on January 31, 2017, as a specialized Technical Institution of the Africa Union tasked with promoting the prevention and control of diseases in Africa Union Member states.
This is the first physical Summit to be held since Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic in 2020.
The Summit is under the theme of ‘Building Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent: ‘Strengthen Agriculture, Accelerate the Human Capital, Social and Economic Development’.
