Boost for Somalia Aviation Sector as Aircraft Repair Centre Reopens
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s aviation sector received a major boost Wednesday with the re-opening of the country’s first and only aircraft repair center after 34 years of closure.
The Blue Hanger facility, located at the Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, will provide safety and maintenance services for planes flying in and out of Somalia.
Transport and Aviation minister Fardowso Igaal while inaugurated the facility and praised its role in enhancing the country’s air connectivity and security.
The reopening of the facility further enhances the aviation capacity of the Aden Abdulle airport, which accommodates over 130 flights a day – but lacks a maintenance and repair facility – forcing aircrafts to seek such facilities from neighboring countries such as Kenya and Uganda.
According to Ismail Abdullahi Goni, the Executive Director of Aerosom Company, responsible for running the facility, the reopening of the hanger was due to the growing need for the services in the capital Mogadishu, and other parts of the country.
Ahmed M. Hassan, the Director-General of the Somali Civil Aviation Organization noted that Somalia remains the only country yet to be inspected by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
He said the re-opening of the Blue Hangar now aligns with the requisites set forth by ICAO, paving the way for Somalia to join the global aviation community.
Federal Government of Somalia Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Fardowsa Oman Igal while inaugurating the hanger commended Aerosom Company for their role in elevating the country’s aviation capabilities.
She encouraged Somali companies to invest in the transport and aviation sector, highlighting its profitability and the benefits it offers to businesses, the government, and the Somali community at large.
