Nine Al-Shabaab militants among them two commanders were killed Friday by Somali special forces in an operation in Gedo region, a district official has said.
Buurdhuubo District commissioner Hassan Mohamed Ali said the forces neutralised the militants following a operation some 38 kilometres out of Buurdhuubo town.
The Special Forces of Jubbaland have carried out the operation and have recovered weapons and ammunition from the fighters,” the Ali said. “The operations will continue until al-Shabab fighters are eliminated out of all areas under Burdhuubo town.”
Ali also said that they have strengthened security operations in general and will continue such operations against al-Shabaab in the region.
Al-Shabaab has not given out any information regarding the casualties.
Somali military backed by allied forces including U.S. and AU troops intensified the war on Al-Shabaab in South and central Somalia.
