Abdiweli Ibrahim Garyare Elected Galmudug State Deputy President
GOOBJOOG NEWS|DHUSAMAREB: Abdiweli Ibrahim Garyare has been elected Galmudug’s new deputy leader after winning a parliamentary vote in Dhusamareb on Thursday.
According to the vote-counting results, Garyare secured 64 votes, defeating his challenger, Abdisatar Mohamed Gelle, who received 20 votes.
Garyare contested under the Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP), while Gelle represented the Sincad political organisation.
His victory follows the election of fellow JSP candidate Liban Ahmed Hassan as Galmudug’s leader. Liban won 72 of the 89 votes cast, defeating Sincad’s Abdulkadir Abdullahi Diriye, who received 14 votes, while three ballots were spoiled.
The results place both executive offices in the hands of JSP, which entered the leadership elections holding 67 of the regional assembly’s 89 seats.
Candidates addressed lawmakers on Wednesday, presenting pledges on security, reconciliation, public services, infrastructure and employment opportunities for young people.
The leadership elections follow September’s repeat parliamentary vote, held after Somalia’s Supreme Court annulled the July election over constitutional and procedural violations.
