Abdiweli Mohamed Gaas appointed a new governor for Sool region.
Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Gaas has today appointed the new governor of Sool region.
Gaas named this position for Abuubakar Abdi Guelleh, and wished him the best of all for his new role to play in the region but still the region of Sool is experiencing tensions boarder between Puntland and Somaliland as well as fighting.
Tensions have been simmering for weeks in Tukaraq, 90km north of Garowe since Somaliland forces took control of the strategic town in Sool region from Puntland defense forces on 8th january 2018 following heavy attack from both sides.
The dispute over the regions of Sool and Sanag in northern Somalia began in 1998, when Puntland formed and declared the regions as sovereign territory based on the ethnic make-up of the region’s inhabitants and their clan ties to Puntland.
Somaliland claims Sool and Sanag because the regions fall geographically within the borders of pre-independence British Somaliland. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991, but is not internationally recognized.
