GOOBJOOG NEWS | MALABO: The African Union has approved $10 million in emergency funding to support its new peace support operation in Somalia, the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), amid growing security and fiscal pressures.

The decision was passed during the AU Executive Council’s 47th session in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, with the funds set to be drawn from the AU’s Emergency Contingency Reserve Fund.

According to AU officials, the funding is aimed at strengthening AUSSOM’s operational capacity as it takes over from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which concluded its mandate earlier this year.

“This support is critical to enable AUSSOM to fulfill its mandate under difficult financial and security conditions,” the AU said in a statement, calling for increased international political and financial support.

Launched in early 2025, AUSSOM is tasked with promoting peace, stabilizing liberated areas, and supporting Somali-led state-building efforts in the face of ongoing threats from Al-Shabaab insurgents.

AU leaders warned that without sustained backing, the mission’s ability to secure gains made under ATMIS could be undermined, potentially affecting the broader stability of the Horn of Africa.
