African Union Opposes Recognition of Somaliland, Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Unity

GOOBJOOG NEWS|ADDIS ABABA: The African Union has firmly rejected any move to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, reiterating its unwavering commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said the continental body had taken note “with deep concern” of recent developments relating to Somaliland, amid growing regional and international reactions.

Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s long-standing and consistent position, grounded in the Constitutive Act of the AU, which upholds respect for borders inherited at independence. He cited the 1964 decision of the Organization of African Unity as a cornerstone of Africa’s collective approach to statehood and territorial integrity.

“The Chairperson of the Commission firmly rejects any initiative or action aimed at recognizing Somaliland as an independent entity,” the statement said, stressing that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The AU warned that any attempt to undermine Somalia’s unity and sovereignty runs counter to the Union’s foundational principles and risks setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for peace and stability across the continent.

The statement also reaffirmed the African Union’s full support for Somalia’s federal authorities, particularly their efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions, and advance inclusive governance.

The AU’s position adds to a growing list of regional and international actors rejecting recognition of Somaliland, as diplomatic fallout continues following Israel’s decision to formally recognize the self-declared state.
