U.S.-Backed Air Strikes Kill Dozens of Al-Shabaab Fighters in Southern Somalia
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: U.S.-backed air strikes in southern Somalia have killed at least 30 Al-Shabaab fighters, according to security sources, as operations intensify against the militant group.
The strikes targeted hideouts in Middle Juba and Lower Shabelle regions, including Sablaale, Kunyobarrow and Yaaqbariweyne, where militants were reportedly preparing for an operation.
Sources said the airstrike also destroyed weapons caches and disrupted the planned offensive.
In a separate strike in Jilib district, a vehicle carrying suspected senior Al-Shabaab members was hit, with reports of casualties among those on board.
The United States has regularly conducted air strikes in support of Somali government operations against Al-Shabaab, which it designates as a terrorist organisation.
The Somali government has yet to issue an official statement confirming details of the latest strikes.
The operations come as Somali forces, backed by international partners, step up pressure on the group in southern and central regions, reporting gains in recent weeks.
