Airstrikes Hit Suspected Al-Shabaab Bases in Central Somalia

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Heavy airstrikes were carried out overnight against suspected al Shabaab positions on the border between Somalia’s Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions.

Local sources said the strikes hit Hareera Culusow, an area under militant control, where witnesses reported explosions at known al Shabaab bases adding that fighters, including senior commanders, had gathered at the site at the time of the attack.

Residents reported hearing the bombardment from miles away, underscoring its intensity. Casualty figures remain unclear, but sources said “many” militants were killed.

There has been no immediate comment from Somalia’s federal government or its international security partners on who carried out the strikes or the extent of the damage.

Al Shabaab, which has waged an insurgency in Somalia for over 15 years, frequently comes under air and ground assaults by Somali forces and foreign allies, particularly in central and southern regions.
