Al-Shabaab fighters ambush AU convoy in Middle Shabelle

At least two people were killed and several others injured in heavy fighting between the African Union peacekeeping troops and Al-Shabaab fighters in Mahaday district of Middle Shabelle region.

Residents say heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters ambushed a convoy carrying Burundian soldiers of AMISOM contingent at Mir-Taqwo village, outskirts of Mahaday district in Middle Shabelle region.

Osman Ali Farah, a resident in Mir-Taqwo village said that armed Al-Shabaab fighters launched a major attack on AMISOM convoy.

“Heavy clash between AU forces and Al-Shabaab fighters broke out after Al-Shabaab fighters attacked AMISOM convoy,” said a resident at Mir-Taqwo village.

According to independent sources, two civilians were killed during the heavy fighting which lasted for close to an hour.

“The battle lasted for about an hour claiming two civilians. We cannot know the casualties on both sides,” the source said.
