Al-Shabaab fires motor shells on AMISOM base in Leego town
Suspected Al-Shabaab fighters have fired mortar shells on a military base of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in Leego town in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region.
Heavy explosions could be heard Saturday overnight by residents in neighborhoods of the town.
Residents said several mortars landed near the base, but it was not immediately clear whether anyone had been hit.
“We heard explosions at the base after several motors landed near and in the compound of AMISOM military base, we do not know the casualties,” said one of the residents living near the base.
Through its media, Al-Shabab claimed to have carried out the heavy attack against AU base in Leego town.
The group militant claimed they dropped several mortar shells into the base at midnight.
“We attacked the military base manned by Burundian soldiers in Leego town with mortar shells. Several landed inside the base,” Al-Shabab’s military operation spokesman.
