Al-Shabaab militant surrenders to police in Gedo region

GOOBJOOG NEWS|GARBAHAREY: An Al-Shabaab militant surrendered to the Somali National Security and Intelligence officers on Friday, in Gedo region.

The man, identified as Abdiaziz Mohamud Diriye, said he was one of Al-Shabaab’s active members, since his recruitment  to the group 12 years ago.

Asked in an interview why he defected from the group, Diriye said his decision was based on his inability to continue coping with the conditions of the group, and had therefore decided to surrender the government.

Diriye adds to the number of several former Al-Shabaab members who have surrendered voluntarily to the Somali police, a major win to the Somali government as it fights against the group that has continued to unleash terror on the country and it’s neighbours.
