Al-Shabaab militants destroy communication mast in Mandera, Kenya
Armed gun men suspected to be Al-Shabaab Thursday morning attacked and vandalised a communication mast in Mandera, northern Kenya.
Sources say the militants attacked Fino town located between Lafey and Arabia in Mandera at around 2am local time and destroyed the mast. There was also exchange of fire with security guards manning the facility but there were no casualties reported, Lafey police chief Bosiata Omukolongolo told the media.
The development comes barely a month after another mast was destroyed by Al-Shabaab militants in Damasa near Lafey before crossing the border to Somalia.
Al-Shabaab has on several occasions attacked Mandera and Garissa towns in Kenya’s northern frontier districts killing many people. In 2014, Al-Shabaab attacked Garissa University killing 148 students. Another 28 people most of them teachers were killed in a bus attack in Mandera the same year.
