AMISOM donates ten motorcycles to Somali police
African Mission in Somalia, AMISOM has today donated 10 motor cycles to Somali police as part of its institutional capacity building programme.
AMISOM police commissioner Anand Pillay told Goobjoog News the donation will go a long way in helping the traffic police manage traffic within the city.
“They will be trained in traffic management as well in order that they can utilise these motorcycles and manage traffic within the city,” said Pillay.
Pillay said AMISOM is also involved in community based policing but will be intensified once there is a clear policing framework in the country.
“We are in the process of developing community policy strategy for Somalia specifically designed for this country. But we are getting intense once we have a framework for the country,” added Pillay.
AMISOM, Pillay said is also involved in building infrastructure for the police in Somalia such as rehabilitation of police stations and equipping them to enable the local police work in a more effective way.
AMISOM police is part of the larger AMISOM mandate which also incorporates troops in the frontline. Currently five countries, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria and Sierra Leone contribute police to AMISOM.
