AMISOM Hails the Federal Ministry of Gender for Spearheading the Adoption of the National Gender Policy
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) recognizes the importance of gender mainstreaming in the development and implementation of public policies.
As a result of this recognition, the Mission provided technical assistance to the Ministry of Women and Human Rights, in drafting its first National Gender Policy.
AMISOM is pleased that the Federal Government of Somalia is taking concrete steps in promoting gender equality with the adoption of the policy on 26 May 2016.
The Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (DSRCC) for Somalia Hon. Lydia Wanyoto congratulated the Minister of Women and Human Rights, H.E Sahra Samatar on this achievement during a courtesy call in her office.
The National Gender Policy outlines national priorities in the advancement of women.
The Minister commended AMISOM for its immeasurable support and appealed for more resources during the policy implementation phase, especially on political representation of women. The policy will play a key role in ensuring the success of the 30% allocation of seats for women in parliament.
Hon. Wanyoto reiterated AMISOM’s commitment to support the Federal Government of Somalia, in strengthening the country’s gender machinery. AMISOM
