GOOBJOOG NEWS/MOGADISHU: An appeal by a man sentenced to death for killing his wife is this morning commencing in Mogadishu following the lapse of the one month granted by a lower court for appeal.

The Banaadir Regional Appeals Court is commencing the hearing of the appeal filed by Sayid Ali Macalin Daoud who was sentenced to death on March 6 for the murder of his pregnant wife, Luul Abdiaisis.

During the much-publicised proceedings in February, Daud was accused of setting his wife on fire his wife. Among the witnesses were his children. The appearance of the minors in open court however attracted criticism on the grounds it amounted to further trauma.

However, Daud had then told the court that he only set the house on fire because his wife had claimed she wanted to get married to another man. He said his wife jumped into the fire and refused to be rescued.

She later succumbed to her injuries in a hospital in Mogadishu after she was moved from her home in the Middle Shabelle region.
