Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union Says Israel Move Violates Somalia Sovereignty

GOOBJOOG NEWS | BEIRUT: The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) has rejected Israel’s move to recognize Somalia’s Somaliland region, calling the move a violation of international law and an attack on Somalia’s sovereignty.

In a statement issued from Beirut, AIPU President Ibrahim Boughali, who is also speaker of Algeria’s parliament, said the union “rejects any unilateral action that undermines Somalia’s territorial integrity, political stability, and security.”

The union described the reported recognition as interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state, warning it could destabilise the Horn of Africa and the wider Arab region. It said such moves risk fueling division and fragmentation at a sensitive time for regional security.

AIPU said its position was grounded in the United Nations Charter, including Article 2(4), which prohibits actions against the territorial integrity or political independence of states, as well as a 1970 UN General Assembly resolution affirming non-interference in domestic affairs. On that basis, it said any recognition of Somaliland was legally null and void.

The union added that Somalia’s security and stability were an integral part of Arab national security and reaffirmed full solidarity with the Federal Government of Somalia in efforts to safeguard the country’s unity.

It called for coordinated Arab action to confront external threats and urged the international community to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and reject separatism.

The statement adds to growing regional and international support for Mogadishu amid heightened diplomatic tensions over Somalia’s territorial integrity.
