Arab League Cancels Majority of Somalia’s Membership Debt

Storyline:National News

GOOBJOOG NEWS | CAIRO: The Arab League has written off three-quarters of Somalia’s unpaid membership fees, a debt that had piled up over nearly four decades.

Somalia’s ambassador to Egypt and representative to the League, Ali Abdi Aware, told the 164th session of the bloc’s Permanent Representatives in Cairo that the waiver marked a “historic achievement” for Mogadishu.

He credited the decision to sustained diplomatic engagement by Somalia’s embassy in Cairo, backed by the country’s leadership.

The League’s move eases Somalia’s financial obligations as the government pursues broader economic reforms and works to re-establish its standing in regional and international organisations.
