Arab League Condemns Israeli Visit to Hargeisa, Backs Somalia’s Sovereignty
GOOBJOOG NEWS | CAIRO: The Arab League has condemned a visit by Israel’s foreign minister to Hargeisa in northern Somalia, calling it a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and a threat to regional stability.
In a statement, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the visit was an attempt to legitimise actions that fall outside the authority of Somalia’s federal government, reaffirming the bloc’s rejection of any engagement with separatist entities.
Aboul Gheit said such moves undermine Somalia’s unity, risk escalating political tensions and could destabilise the wider Horn of Africa, Red Sea and Gulf of Aden regions.
The Arab League’s spokesman, Gamal Rashidi, said the visit had been rejected at both Arab and international levels, noting that the League’s council had already declared similar actions null and void at a meeting on Dec. 28, 2025.
Rashidi also voiced concern over what he described as plans linked to the displacement of Palestinians and the potential use of Somali ports for foreign military bases.
The Arab League said it would continue political and technical support for Somalia’s state institutions, warning against actions that could create new conflict zones or threaten the security of key regional maritime routes.
