Arab League Engagement with Somalia Opens Door to Investment and Development

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia is set to gain from strengthened political and economic cooperation with the Arab League, following high-level talks between Somali Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre and Ambassador Abdullah Al-Otaibi, Head of the Arab League Mission in Somalia.
The meeting, held Wednesday in Mogadishu, focused on unlocking new opportunities for foreign investment and cultural cooperation, as Somalia continues efforts to rebuild its economy and public institutions after years of conflict and climate-related crises.
Prime Minister Barre outlined sectors ripe for development — including agriculture, fisheries, energy, petroleum, livestock, and mining — and emphasized Somalia’s readiness to welcome strategic investment from Arab League member states.
Observers say the Arab League’s renewed commitment signals broader regional confidence in Somalia’s stabilization process and reform agenda. Increased engagement is expected to enhance trade ties, improve infrastructure, and create jobs in key industries.
Ambassador Al-Otaibi reaffirmed the Arab League’s support and highlighted plans to promote Arabic-language education in Somalia, where Arabic holds constitutional status as an official language. Expanded language education is seen as a tool to strengthen cultural integration and workforce development.
The talks mark a step forward in Somalia’s strategy to deepen ties with Arab nations, positioning itself as a viable partner for economic cooperation and long-term regional integration.
