At Least 20 Al-Shabaab Militants Killed in Central Somalia Operation

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali government forces, backed by local militias, killed at least 20 al Shabaab militants, including a senior commander, during a military operation in the Nur Gadow area of Middle Shabelle region on Friday, officials said.

The federal government confirmed the joint offensive in a statement but did not disclose the identity or rank of the militant leader killed.

“Our defence forces eliminated more than 20 members of al Shabaab, including a senior militant, in the Nur Gadow operation,” the statement said.

The operation is part of renewed efforts by Somalia’s federal government to weaken the Al Qaeda-linked group’s presence in central regions.

Military campaigns have intensified across the Hirshabelle state, combining ground assaults and airstrikes supported by clan militias and international partners.

The government forces has reported gains in the operations which are aimed at eliminating remnants of the militants still entrenched in parts of rural Somalia.
