At least 30 Al-Shabaab militants felled in clash with Amisom in Lower Shabelle

At least 30 Al-Shabaab militants were neutralized in a deadly clash with African Union forces in Lower Shabelle region following simultaneous by the group on three Forward Operating Bases.

Amisom said in a statement Monday its forces repulsed the attacks inflicting heavy casualties on the militants and destroying their weaponry in Quoryole, Bulomareer, and Golwein Amisom bases.

“The militants were dealt a heavy blow, with at least 30 of them put out of action, following intense fighting,” Amisom said. “Eight vehicles which ferried the terrorists, including two Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices were destroyed and an assortment of weapons recovered.”

The mission however lost four of its soldiers drawn from Uganda while six others were injured.

“We honor our brave soldiers, who are resolute in continuing to neutralize the insurgents in order to restore peace and stability in Somalia,” said Amisom chief Francisco Madeira.

Al-Shabaab had earlier claimed to have lost 14 of its own and killed over 50 Amisom troops.

Several rocket propelled grenades, AK 47 guns and several rounds of ammunition amongst an assortment of weapons were seized by the forces.

The attack on Ugandan forces is the second in less than a year following a similar clash in  Golwein which claimed 12 Uganda soldiers.
