ADDIS ABABA, Xinhua: Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat warned on Wednesday that violent conflicts continue to undermine peace and security in Africa.
The chairperson of the pan-African bloc made the remarks while addressing the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the AU, which began Wednesday at the headquarters of the AU in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
“Violent conflicts continue to kill, on a large scale, in Africa. Sudan and the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are, in all respects, the most poignant, and the most tragic theaters,” Faki said.
He emphasized the importance of promoting good governance, fostering continental collaboration, and advancing socioeconomic development as effective solutions to address Africa’s peace and security perils.
The AU Commission chief further called for the strengthening of the international multilateral system on the backdrop of global peace and security challenges.
In his final address to the executive council meeting during his eight-year tenure at the helm of the AU Commission, Faki also highlighted the importance of understanding the political architecture, as well as the roles of peace, security, governance, and partnerships, for the success of the upcoming AU leadership.
The AU executive council meeting, which comprises foreign ministers from AU members and runs from Wednesday to Thursday, is being held under the AU’s theme for the year 2025: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”
