ADDIS ABABA, Xinhua: Officials and experts have called for harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology to spur intra-African trade and realize the core aspirations of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement.

They made the call during the 16th High-Level African Union Private Sector Forum, which runs from Monday to Wednesday in Djibouti, under the theme “Harnessing Africa’s Digital Economy and Innovation for Accelerating Intra-Africa Trade and Sustainable Development.”

Addressing the forum, AU Commission Director General Fathallah Sijilmassi underscored the urgent need to expedite private-sector growth, innovation, and digital transformation to address challenges hindering the growth of intra-African trade, such as infrastructure gaps and fragmented regulations.

“The fact that intra-African trade remains low highlights the need to leverage digital technologies for inclusive growth and accelerated integration. We need to develop concrete solutions to build a thriving African digital economy,” Sijilmassi said.

The forum, which brought together African innovators across various sectors, including financial technology, blockchain and AI, acknowledged the vital role of harnessing AI, digital trade, harmonized policies, and greater investment as engines for the effective operationalization of the AfCFTA.

Describing digital technology as “an indispensable pillar for continental integration, competitiveness, and strategic autonomy,” Djibouti’s Minister of Trade and Tourism Mohamed Warsama Dirieh called for collective action in infrastructure development and market linkage.

“Digital transformation is a key lever for strengthening integration, stimulating innovation, and creating new opportunities for our youth — the driving force behind sustainable growth,” Dirieh said.
