AU Mission, Arab League Back Mogadishu Vote, Urge Political Dialogue
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the Arab League has welcomed Mogadishu’s municipal elections, while urging Somali leaders to maintain dialogue and national consensus to protect the gains from the vote.
In separate statements, the two organisations described the capital’s first direct local elections in nearly 60 years as a milestone for popular participation, saying the vote strengthened constitutional legitimacy by allowing citizens to choose their local representatives.
They emphasized that sustained political dialogue and unity are crucial as Somalia continues to confront security challenges and advance its state-building efforts, warning that progress depends on inclusive and peaceful engagement among political actors.
Both bodies reaffirmed their support for Somalia’s democratic transition and called on all stakeholders to safeguard the achievements of the elections through cooperation and dialogue.
The endorsements underline strong regional and international backing for the Mogadishu vote, seen as a critical step in rebuilding trust in democratic governance.
