Baidoa residents to benefit from a well rehabilitate amid water shortage hit parts of the region
A rehabilitated well in Baidoa town that will supply clean water to communities living aronud it, has been inaugurated amid many parts of the region hit severe drought.
The inauguration ceremony presided over by ISWA Minister of Agriculture Mohamed Hassan Fiqi, was attended by military officials from AMISOM Sector 3, led by contingent commander Brigadier General Gabremeskel Gebrezigabe, the local administration and community leaders.
“With the dry season biting hard, the rehabilitation of the well could not have come at better time for the people of Baidoa,” Minister Fiqi said.
AMISOM Sector 3 Commander, Gabremeskel Gebrezigabe said the well will cater for 50% of the demand.
Gebrezigabe said AMISOM planned to drill 15 wells in Bay region to alleviate the suffering of populations living there.
“I wish to thank all those who took part in the rehabilitation and maintenance of the well,” he stated.
AMISOM rehabilitated the well with support from the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) and handed it over to the local authorities.
The well, drilled in 2013 broke down due to technical challenges.
The deteriorating situation in Bay, Bakool and Gedo regions, brought about by a pro-longed dry spell has seen vulnerable communities flee their homes and seek assistance in the administrative capital.
The South West Administration is appealing for assistance to help the drought-stricken communities.
