GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The administration of Somalia’s Banaadir region has pledged $200,000 in humanitarian aid to support communities in the drought-stricken Awdal region, as worsening conditions raise fears of a deepening crisis.

Governor and Mayor of Mogadishu Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein announced the contribution following a high-level meeting with federal lawmakers and ministers representing Awdal. The officials presented a detailed account of the humanitarian emergency, relaying urgent appeals from community elders and local leaders.

“The people of Banaadir stand in solidarity with the people of Awdal,” said Dr. Hussein. “This is a national moment for compassion and action.”

The funds will be channeled through the National Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs Agency (SoDMA), which will oversee the distribution of aid to ensure timely and targeted relief reaches affected families.

The initiative underscores a growing spirit of interregional cooperation in Somalia, where climate-induced disasters such as droughts and floods are putting millions at risk of food insecurity, displacement, and loss of livelihoods.

Officials say the contribution is aimed at delivering immediate life-saving assistance and preventing further deterioration of the humanitarian situation. The formal transfer of funds to SoDMA has already been initiated.

Somalia remains highly vulnerable to cyclical droughts, and humanitarian agencies have repeatedly called for increased national and international support to avert widespread suffering in hard-hit regions like Awdal.
