Bariire Recaptured As Somali Troops Kill 120 Militants

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali government forces have killed at least 120 Al-Shabaab militants in heavy fighting near Bariire Bridge, a strategic location in the Lower Shabelle region, the defence minister said on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters in Mogadishu, minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said the Somali National Armed Forces (SNA) also seized a large cache of weapons and military equipment during the operation. Several militants were captured alive, while others fled, abandoning their arms.

“Troops are now clearing the area, including recovering the bodies of fighters left scattered in the town,” Fiqi said, describing Bariire’s recapture as a key step in a broader push to drive the Islamist group from southern Somalia.
