GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The federal government of Somalia’s cabinet has approved new regulations governing the registration of maritime vessels, a move the government says will strengthen oversight of ships operating under the Somali flag and improve safety standards at sea.

Ports and Maritime Transport Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur welcomed the decision, thanking the cabinet for endorsing the Maritime Vessel Registration Regulation, which applies to commercial ships and various types of boats seeking to sail under Somalia’s flag.

The new framework establishes a unified legal system for managing maritime transport, with an emphasis on safety compliance, effective inspections and protection of the marine environment, the minister said.

The regulations are also aimed at safeguarding the credibility of Somalia’s national flag by preventing illegal use and ensuring compliance with international maritime conventions.

The government believes this will boost international confidence in Somalia’s maritime administration and support the sustainable development of the country’s marine resources.
