Somali Cabinet Hails Anti-Terror Progress, Approves Egypt Pact

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s federal cabinet has commended significant progress in military operations against Al-Shabaab militants, as the government balances a dual push for security stabilization and international diplomacy.

At a weekly Council of Ministers meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre in Mogadishu, officials reviewed security reports detailing recent territorial gains by Somali forces and regional allies.

The government highlighted the liberation of strategic areas and disruption of militant networks as major achievements in its counterterrorism campaign.

“The sacrifices of our security forces and local communities are bringing results,” Prime Minister Barre told the cabinet, stressing the need to sustain momentum through continued investment in troop equipment, training, and logistics.

Ministers also emphasized deepening collaboration between security agencies and civilians in newly liberated regions to ensure long-term peace.

The Council praised the Somali National Army and allied regional units for their efforts, framing the military advances as critical steps in restoring national control and protecting citizens from extremist threats.

In a move to enhance Somalia’s foreign relations, the cabinet also approved a bilateral agreement with Egypt to waive visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders. The agreement, allowing 90-day entry without restrictions, is aimed at fostering high-level diplomatic engagement and strengthening ties between the two nations.

Prime Minister Barre underlined that Somalia’s path to recovery depends on both internal stability and robust international cooperation. “Our military successes and growing global partnerships are two sides of the same coin,” he said.

The government signaled its intent to continue supporting frontline troops while expanding diplomatic and economic ties with regional and international partners.
