GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia is set to benefit from deeper cooperation with China following a high-level roundtable held in Mogadishu on Sunday, where officials from both sides agreed to expand collaboration in trade, development, and social sectors.

The meeting, themed “Mutual Support and Joint Efforts, Strengthen China–Somalia Cooperation,” focused on advancing projects that promote economic growth, education, and human capacity development. It coincided with the 64th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Participants agreed to enhance coordination in infrastructure, health, and skills training, with China reaffirming its commitment to support Somalia’s national development agenda. The talks also highlighted Somalia’s potential to boost exports under China’s zero-tariff policy for all Somali goods.

State Minister of Family and Human Rights Mohamed Osman Omar said the renewed cooperation would “translate into real benefits for Somali citizens” through practical projects that strengthen livelihoods, improve services, and expand opportunities for youth and women.

Deputy Minister of Health Mohamed Hassan Mohamed said Somalia’s partnership with China continues to “deliver measurable progress,” especially in education, technology, and healthcare.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Gulaid noted that China’s sustained investment in infrastructure and training has already contributed to Somalia’s reconstruction and called for “results-driven cooperation that builds lasting capacity.”

The meeting concluded with a joint pledge to scale up bilateral initiatives that support Somalia’s social and economic transformation, signaling a new phase in the countries’ long-standing partnership.
