Chinese ambassador to Somalia chides Somaliland over ‘Taiwan border’ claim

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Chinese ambassador to Somalia Fei Shangchao has hit out at Somaliland for its call that China should respect Taiwan’s borders.

In a Twitter post responding to a user who made reference to the Somaliland Foreign Affairs claim, the Chinese diplomat scolded Somaliland for claiming a ‘non-existent’ border between China and Taiwan.

“National borders must be respected, but don’t make oneself a laughingstock by making “national borders” where there is none. Common sense families don’t draw borders inside a house, Shangchao said.

Somaliland Foreign Ministry said on its official Twitter account that this week’s Chinese military exercises simulating an attack on Taiwan amounted to a border breach.

“A country’s existent national borders are to be respected and protected against terrorist infiltration or external threats, but China’s drills are, in fact, breaking the Taiwan Strait status quo Somaliland stands strong with Taiwan and are united with fellow democracies,” the break-away region said.

The drills followed a meeting by Taiwan President, Tsai Ing-wen with the US House speaker, Kevin McCarthy, in Los Angeles last week.
