Chinese government donates equipment to AMISOM
Government of China has donated equipment and general supplies to African Union troops in Somalia.
A handover ceremony which attend officials from AMISOM, the Chief of Defence Forces Kenya, Gen. Samson Mwathethe, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary of Defence, Ms Raychelle Omamo, representatives of the Chinese Government was held.
Speaking at the function, AU special representative to Somalia, Francisco Caetano Madeira said that the equipment could not have come at a more appropriate time, as AMISOM journeys through a critical stage in the fight against militant insurgency by Al-Shabaab in Somalia.
“These general supplies and equipment will go a long way in helping to strengthen the work of AMISOM in Somalia,” Amb. Madeira said.
He said AMISOM has made remarkable progress in the stability of Somalia, and the next step requires concrete operational commitments, logistical equipment and intelligence gathering equipment, something that cannot be provided by African Union alone.
Madeira lauded the Chinese Government for its support to the AU’s efforts in Somalia and the larger peace and security agenda.
