President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has for the first time spoken publicly about his choice for Prime Minister noting his endorsement of Hassan Ali Khair was informed by shared principles and values.

Speaking after arrival from a three day official visit in Saudi Arabia Saturday, Farmaajo said he settled for Khair as his Premier because “I believe he shares the same principles and values with me and he will govern in accordance with these tenets,” said Farmaajo.

Khair, the president said is a man of principles and will work in promoting a corrupt free and transparent government.

The president also singled out Khair’s experience in management and inter-personal relations which he noted are instrumental in not only running government but also promoting dialogue and reconciliation among Somalis.

“Hassan Ali Khair has been working closely with regional governments and he is well known. He can therefore help foster a team work approach with the regional administrations,” the president observed.

The PM designate has worked in the humanitarian world and his experience will be instrumental especially in handling the drought issue affecting the country, the president argued out his case for the former oil executive who is yet to be approved by Parliament.

Khair resigned this week from Soma Oil and Gas and also relinquished his shareholding in the British oil explorer in what was largely seen as step in promoting ethical practices in governance.

For the last 12 years, the president observed, there has been consistent conflict between the President and Prime Minister causing changes in government every so often. Farmaajo was himself a victim and was hounded out after a five month stay in office as PM in 2011.

Former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud worked with three Prime Ministers during his four year tenure just like all Presidents before him since 2000. Somalia has had nine Prime Ministers since the year 2000.

“I am confident we will work together for the next four years, the president affirmed.
