City road renamed after one of Somali language script inventors

Somali prime minister, Hassan Ali Kheire cutting ribbon of the upgraded Kadare Road in Mogadishu

 

Somali government has renamed one of the roads in the city as part of commemorating heroes and heroines for their selfless service to the country.

Mogadishu local government said that Karan-Abdiasis Road will be renamed Ahmed Sheikh Hussein kadare, one of Somalia’s most reputed educators who advocated for empowering the Somali language.

The road was upgraded by Mogadishu administration collaborating with the public.

Speaking during the cutting of ribbon event, Somali prime minister, Hassan Ali Kheire said that his government will honour Kadare for his efforts in championing causes during his lifetime.

Kheire commended Mogadishu residents, the mayor and his administration for their commitment to rebuild the country.

“We gathered here to witness this event to mark the completion of this upgraded road funded by the public and the administration of Mogadishu. This is an indication that shows Somali stood to rebuild their country,” said Kheire.

Kadare who was born in Adale, a farming village in Lower Shabelle region in 1934 died 2015 at the age of 81.

He is remembered as a pioneer in strengthening Somali as a national language and spreading literacy and education throughout Somalia.

The Somali language was officiated in 1972 by the former Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre.
