Clan clashes in northern Somalia leaves at least 5 dead

Five people were reported killed on Monday evening in renewed clashes between two pastoral clans in Somalia’s northern region Sool.

Six others have been admitted in Hospital with serious wounds sustained in the fighting between clan militias who disputed over pasture and water amid the region faces severe drought.

Local residents spoke to Goobjoog News ‎put the figure of fatalities at Five and said the clashes occurred on grazing land.

The situation had been brought under control by the traditional elders but tension was still high as more militiamen were deployed to the area.

Residents said the fighting had stopped but more was expected as gunmen had been flowing into the area.

“We can report that six people were killed and six others were admitted in Hospital,” said.one of the elders who participated the intervention of the clashes.

It is believed that the number of dead could rise as the whereabouts of a number of people are still unknown.

Hundreds of residents fled the village as their herds scattered because of the loud explosions.

Since the collapse of the Central government in 1991, Water, pasture and politics have been at the center of sporadic clashes between Somali tribes across the country.
