Clan Divisions at Heart of Somalia’s Crises, Deputy Minister Says
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Deputy Information, Culture and Tourism Minister Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adaalla has warned that tribalism remains the underlying force driving many of the country’s toughest challenges, from terrorism to poverty and irregular migration.
Speaking at a public forum in Mogadishu, Al-Adaalla said clan-based divisions continue to weaken national unity and create openings for extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab to exploit. He linked insecurity, economic hardship and outward migration to what he described as the country’s enduring reliance on clan identity over national citizenship.
“Migration, fear, terrorism and poverty are all symptoms of the tribalism we cling to,” he said. “The only cure for these ailments is a strong, unified state with a solid foundation.”
He emphasized that a capable state is central not only to security but also to economic progress and fair service delivery. Moving beyond clan loyalties, he said, is essential for building institutions that can deliver justice, protection and opportunity equally to all Somalis.
The remarks come as the Federal Government steps up efforts to counter extremist ideology and promote social reconciliation. Al-Adaalla’s message underscored the government’s position that long-term stability depends on strengthening national identity and accelerating state-building efforts.
