Close to 100 Somalis have crossed to Ethiopia from Sudan-Foreign Minister

GOOBJOOG NEWS|ETHIOPIA: Nearly 100 Somalis have crossed the border from Sudan to Ethiopia as several countries evacuate their nationals, Somalis Foreign Affairs Minister Abshir Huruse said.

Speaking to VOA Somalia, Huruse said the government had confirmed that 90 Somalis have crossed To the Ethiopian town of Metema by road. The minister said 51 Somalis had arrived on Monday morning while others arrived in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) has issued phone numbers that Somalis in need of evacuation in Sudan can call. The numbers are 0610511114, 0610511117, and 0610511118  while those who wish to communicate via WhatsApp or Telegram can use these +252610511116.

Several countries have evacuated their nationals from Sudan as fighting continues. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Monday that the two warring sides in the deadly war have agreed to a ceasefire.

““Following intense negotiation over the past 48 hours, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have agreed to implement a nationwide ceasefire starting at midnight on 24 April, to last for 72 hours,” Blinken said.

It is not clear if the two generals will hold their promise following failure to abide by ceasefire commitment at least two times in the last two weeks.
