Committee Advances Somalia’s EAC Representation Process

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Joint Committee for the Selection and Election of Members of Parliament representing Somalia in the East African Community (EAC) held its second meeting on Tuesday, moving forward with preparations to choose Somalia’s first delegates to the regional legislative assembly.
The session, chaired by MP Mohay Abdullahi Hassan, focused on accelerating the selection process and began collecting applications from candidates seeking to represent Somalia in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
Officials said the process aims to ensure transparent and inclusive representation that reflects Somalia’s political and social diversity. Committee members emphasized that the selection will be based on merit and national balance, in line with EAC principles of regional cooperation and shared governance.
The move marks a key step in deepening Somalia’s integration into the East African Community, following its formal admission to the bloc in 2023.
Strong representation in the EALA is expected to strengthen Somalia’s voice in regional policymaking and promote economic and political collaboration with neighboring states.
