Mogadishu Forum Calls for Stronger Federal-State Coordination to Modernise Media Sector

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s federal and state authorities have called for a more coordinated approach to government communication and media development, as the country moves to adapt its media sector to rapid technological and digital changes.

The call emerged at the conclusion of the second National Strategic Communication Forum in Mogadishu, where officials and media stakeholders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the federal government, Federal Member States and the Banadir Regional Administration.

Information Minister Abdulfatah Qasim Mahmoud said the government would work towards establishing a sustainable framework for cooperation across different levels of government, with a focus on modernising the media sector, improving government communications, strengthening information sharing and developing professional skills.

The two-day forum, held under the theme “Shaping the Future of Media in the Modern Era,” focused on the Media Relations Strategy and produced recommendations aimed at creating a more coordinated direction for Somalia’s media institutions.

State information ministers and representatives from Banadir presented regional challenges and proposals for improving cooperation, highlighting the need for closer coordination between national and regional authorities in managing government communications and developing media capacity.

The outcome comes as Somalia’s media environment undergoes rapid change, with digital platforms and social media increasingly shaping how government institutions communicate with citizens and how news is produced and consumed.

The forum’s emphasis on professional skills and modern media developments also points to efforts to strengthen the capacity of government communication teams and media institutions to operate in an increasingly digital environment.

The Ministry of Information said the forum would form part of continuing efforts to strengthen consultation, cooperation and coordination among Somalia’s media institutions and establish a shared direction for the sector.

This is expected to provide a basis for further discussions between the federal government and Federal Member States on implementing the proposed media relations framework and improving coordination in government communication.
