GOOBJOOG NEWS |MOGADISHU: A high-level consultative meeting on the transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has concluded in Mogadishu with a focus on the geographic layout and operational disposition of AUSSOM troops.

The meeting brought together defense chiefs from troop-contributing countries and Somali security officials to deliberate on ways to align AUSSOM’s deployment with the Strategic Concept of Operations (CONOPS).

Somalia’s defense minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur said the alignment of the deployment aims at ensuring the mission’s priorities support the Somali National Army (SNA) as it assumes greater security responsibilities.

“The Somalia-led AUSSOM mission is designed to bolster stabilization efforts, empowering Somali forces to fully take over the country’s security responsibilities,” said Defence Minister Nur.

The transition to AUSSOM, set to begin in January 2025, aims to consolidate gains made under ATMIS while addressing new challenges posed by al-Shabaab and other threats.

Minister Nur emphasized that AUSSOM is a Somalia-led initiative designed to support long-term stability and ensure the SNA is equipped to manage internal and external security challenges.

“This transition is a pivotal moment for Somalia. It represents our growing capacity to secure our nation while strengthening partnerships with regional and international allies,” Nur said.

Defence chiefs from troop-contributing countries, including Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Burundi, and Djibouti, reaffirmed their commitment to the mission’s success. They pledged continued support for Somalia’s stabilization goals and the smooth transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM.
