Danab Commandos Target Militants in Lower Shabelle as Somalia Steps Up Anti-Terror Campaign

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Danaab commandos have launched a sweeping security operation in Lower Shabelle’s Leego area, expanding the government’s intensifying offensive against Al-Shabaab militants in southern Somalia.
The elite forces, part of the Somali National Army (SNA), deployed to clear suspected militant hideouts and secure key supply routes connecting Lower Shabelle to the Bay region, a corridor frequently used by Al-Shabaab fighters to move between regions undetected.
The operation, which includes vehicle searches and road checks, aims to disrupt insurgent movements and restore safe access for civilians and humanitarian operations, military officials said.
The Ministry of Defence praised the Danab unit’s efforts, calling the operation a vital part of the country’s broader counter-terrorism strategy.
“These actions demonstrate the resolve of our forces to push back extremist groups and reclaim security for Somali citizens,” the Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
In recent weeks, Somali security forces have ramped up coordinated military offensives across several regions, including Hirshabelle, Galmudug, and Jubbaland. Backed by local communities and regional allies, these operations have led to the recapture of several strategic villages and transport routes.
The renewed push comes amid growing pressure on the government to secure territory ahead of planned electoral processes and long-term stabilization efforts. Analysts say regaining control of key areas like Lower Shabelle is essential to weakening Al-Shabaab’s operational capacity.
The campaign in Leego is expected to continue over the coming days as part of a sustained push to deny militants freedom of movement and restore government authority across contested regions.
