GOOBJOOG NEWS | DOHA: Defence minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi has said his visit to Qatar will strengthen the country’s military capacity and deepen security cooperation as Mogadishu seeks to expand partnerships to support its fight against militant groups and protect its coastline.

Minister Fiqi, while speaking at the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX 2026), said Somalia was prioritising defence cooperation, training and technology transfer to rebuild its armed forces after decades of conflict.

“The partnerships we are building here are essential to strengthening the Somali National Armed Forces and improving our ability to secure the country and its maritime domain,” Fiqi said, according to a statement from his office.

He said Somalia was working to modernise its army, navy and coast guard, with a focus on professional training and enhanced operational capabilities, particularly in maritime security.

During the visit, Fiqi is expected to sign a defence cooperation agreement with Qatar covering military training and broader security collaboration, a move Somali officials say will support long-term capacity building.

Fiqi is accompanied by senior military commanders and defence officials, underscoring the importance Mogadishu places on expanding international defence partnerships as part of its wider security strategy.
