Displaced families in Mudug face risk of death and disease as drought rages
Hundreds of families living in IDP camps on the outskirts of Galinsoor town in Mudug region are at risk of death or disease over shortage of water and food, residents said.
Khaliif Derow a camp leader in one of the camps told Goobjoog News the situation was running out of hand and a humanitarian crisis was setting in following weeks of food and water shortage. Derow said children were worst affected and the situation must be remedied immediately to avert further crisis.
“The situation is worse today than at any time in the past and the need is even greater. Many of them are living in very poor shelter conditions, poor access to clean drinking water, water, education and health,” said Derow.
The ongoing drought in central and northern regions in addition to Al-Shabaab clash with Galmudug forces has exacerbated the situation, Derowadded.
Derow urged local and international aid agencies to come to the aid of the locals who are now in dire need of humanitarian relief.
Most internally displaced persons (IDPs) continue to live in dire conditions in protracted displacement.
