Djibout contest UN non-permanent seat

Djibouti and Kenya government compete for Africa’s seat on the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday 17th June 2020 at UN headquarters in New York.

The Winner will occupy the influential seat for two years 2021-2022 which is non-permanent seats as the results will be announced at the end of to day.

Djibouti’s candidature presents the probability that if it wins, then all three seats on the UNSC will be held by French-speaking African countries.

According to President Uhuru Kenyatta speech, Kenya will advance the pan-Africanist agenda of global peace, solidarity and multilateralism if elected to join the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Citing Kenya’s long history of contributing troops to peacekeeping interventions, the President noted that Kenya has the right credentials to represent the African continent in the United Nation Security Council.

Despite the two countries competitions for the post, Kenya strongly claimed in a bid for Security Council seat though Kenya pointed out that Djibouti’s decision to stick to the race “brings dishonor and disrepute to the African Union.
