Doolow Airport Reopens After Nearly Two-Year Closure
GOOBJOOG NEWS|GEDO: Doolow Airport in Somalia’s Gedo region resumed operations on Saturday after being closed for nearly two years, with the first flights officially landing at the facility.
The airport’s closure had been linked to political tensions between Somalia’s Federal Government and the Jubaland administration, which have been locked in recurring disputes over political and administrative control in the Gedo region.
The reopening was welcomed by residents across Gedo, particularly in Doolow, where communities had repeatedly called for the restoration of commercial flights.
Doolow, located near Somalia’s border with Ethiopia, is a strategically important town connecting communities and trade routes across Somalia and neighbouring countries, including Ethiopia and Kenya.
The resumption of flights is expected to improve the movement of people and goods, strengthen regional connectivity and ease travel for residents who have faced limited air transport options during the closure.
Local communities also hope the reopening will boost economic activity by facilitating trade and improving access between Doolow and other parts of Somalia.
