Dr. Adam Aw Hassan Elected As North Eastern State First Parliamentary Speaker

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The North Eastern State parliament on Saturday elected Dr. Adam Abdullahi Aw Hassan as its first speaker, a key step in establishing the institutions of the country’s newest federal member state.
Aw Hassan secured 53 votes against 29 for his rival, Abdighafar Mohamud Mohamed, in a session held in Laascaanood. His victory is expected to accelerate the formation of the state’s leadership and integration into Somalia’s federal system.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre congratulated the new speaker, praising lawmakers for completing the vote and pledging Mogadishu’s continued support.
“This is an important step toward unity and the completion of state institutions,” the prime minister said in a statement.
The creation of North Eastern State and the election of its parliamentary leadership mark what officials describe as a significant milestone in Somalia’s push to strengthen its federal model and stabilize its political institutions after decades of conflict.
