Driver of the Al-Shabab truck bomb that hit the entrance of Somalia’s biggest port two weeks ago was apprehended, Somalia’s Somalia National Intelligence Security Agency (NISA) said on Tuesday.

The explosion which occurred on the 11th of this month has claimed lives of  29 people mostly port workers.

On its twitter, NISA identified the suspect behind  truck bomb outside the port as Mohamed Ibrahim Hassan.

The agency said truck bomb was prepared in Jannaale town of Lower Shabelle region.

“NISA learned through an investigation that driver had instruction to go suicide but  parked the truck near the seaport and left,” said NISA.

Al-Shabaab group claimed responsibility for the attack saying they wanted to disrupt protracted parliamentary elections which was then going in the capital city.

Al-Shabaab accuses the presidential and parliamentary candidates of being foreign stooges.

These assaults highlight Al-Shabaab’s ability to launch attacks even though it has lost territory and urban strongholds since a major military offensive against them began.

Somalia has not had a powerful central government since former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was toppled by warlords in 1991.

Since 2007, some 22,000 peacekeepers of the multi-national African Union force have been deployed to the country to aid the government in fighting insurgency.
