EDITORIAL: PM designate Khaire’s resignation from Soma Oil a welcome move

The decision by Prime Minister designate Hassan Ali Khaire to resign his position from Soma Oil and Gas and subsequently relinquish his shareholding in the oil company is not only noble for avoidance of conflict of interest but also a sign of good practice in governance for Somalia.

Soma Oil and Gas which has been involved in seismic exploration in Somalia with prospects of securing production deals is a venture in business with the Federal Government and the involvement of the Prime Minister as both an interested party and broker would ultimately have compromised his execution of the office of Prime Minister.

President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo rode on anti-corruption and clean government platform thus his choice for Prime Minister would effectively have to be informed by similar ideals. Khaire’s decision sets the standard henceforth for holders of public office to come clean on their involvement in any ventures which may pose conflicts of interest.

Somalia has consistently, for quite a few years now been ranked one of the most corrupt countries in the globe denying the country much needed investment and support from across borders. Building trust among the citizens and the international stakeholders is therefore an imperative which Farmaajo’s administration must seize without demur.

Going forward, upon Parliamentary approval Khaire’s picks for cabinet must not only meet the bar but also be seen to be upholding ethical considerations and good practices in running the next government.
