EDITORIAL: We stand for justice for fellow journalist Jamal Khashoggi
The gory murder and dismemberment of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi which culpability now lie in the hands of Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman is not only an abhorrence to humanity but also sends a chilling message to journalists all over the world.
It is against this backdrop therefore that Goobjoog Media Group is today standing in solidarity with all peoples of goodwill and journalists across the globe in demand for justice for the slain journalist. Khashoggi’s murder represents the most foul and cruel price journalists and all those who stand for the truth and a just society ultimately have to pay.
All our journalists are today taking a short time off-work to demonstrate their solidarity and call for justice for our fellow journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Our stand not only affirms our commitment to a free and independent media but also a moral response to the all-encompassing aspect of humanity-sanctity of life. The horrid killing of Khashoggi for political ends signifies the length and breadth those in power can go to, to safeguard their interests and advance their grip on the body and soul of their citizens.
Today it is Khashoggi but tomorrow it may be any other journalist or media organisation abroad or here in Somalia. It is incumbent upon us therefore to speak and let our voice known lest history harshly judge us for our silence. When our moral code is put to question and others opt for convenience, we choose the moral arc for even if it tarries, it ultimately shall bend towards justice.
As Martin Luther King, Jr aptly put, In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.
